Celebrating 100 Years
In the early 1920s, Peoria’s Black residents needed a community center, according to a community fundraising brochure, because “The Negro has absolutely no place to go.” By the 1950s, hundreds of young people praised George Washington Carver Community Center as “the only place to go.” In 2022, Carver honors 100 years of its original mission, “Lifting As We Climb.”
